You have to make it appeal to children, which is easy enough, for the most part. The point I'm trying to make is the fact that you have two make a film that appeals to two very different audiences with different tastes. That's obviously a bit of an exaggeration, but I think parts of it are true. The point is that making films is hard, making good films even harder and making good kids' films is damn near impossible. The Last Mimzy could've been much, much worse but man oh man could it have be so, so much better than what we got.įilms are hard to make, I've never been a person who will ever say that a film is easy to make, even though there's people like Adam Sandler and his group of douchebags that do whatever they can to make a mockery of the people who actually put in the effort without reaching the same level of success as he has. While The Last Mimzy has some good visuals, a solid cast and moments of charm (I certainly wouldn't call it effortless), this family-friendly sci-fi tale, while offering decent-enough counterprogramming for all the fantasy movies coming out at the time, suffers from lack of thrills, struggling to balance elements of drama and thrills, having subplots that eventually come off as irrelevant and just being plain boring sometimes.
